During my postgraduate study, I travelled through Europe collecting tourist fridge magnets to document each journey. These fridge magnets and my travel experience became a focus for exploring social identity and culture. Sherry Turkle’s theory of ‘evocative objects’ inspired my reflections on these objects as devices to anchor memories, sustain friendships, and relate experiential narratives. My project explores my special connection with these objects beyond their materiality or function as companions of shared experience.

[post_content] => There are so many memories I share with my travel souvenirs, and they are a continuous reminder of the special memories and specific moods I felt while traveling in various places. The particular connection I have with these items allows me to cross over the material function of these items and go on to see them as companions with whom I share a common experience. They are like my traveling companions. Therefore, I would like to use them to create a visual project, and while doing so, I wish to evoke the gains and losses of my year in the UK.
This is a calendar with a timeline of 2022.9-2023.9. I have modeled my private reminiscence system with all my fridge magnets elements. I visualized this mental world to show the action of tracing my travel memories through evocative objects. And I simplified all the fridge magnets into graphics and used these graphics to mark the dates in the calendar when I purchased the fridge magnets.

[post_content] => This is a booklet to help me connect with evocative objects. The size of the booklet is divided according to the importance of each month. This was inspired by Mondrian. He often used vertical and horizontal lines to form various grids.
In the booklet that tells the story of 2022, the pictures present the outlines of the original pictures. These lines can be compared to the trajectory of my search for my own direction in life. This concept was a good way to combine my theme of "exploring life plans" with this image manipulation. Then for the 2023 booklet, I chose to process the image as a mosaic of squares, echoing some of the QR code elements found on airplane and train tickets.
