This essay aims to decipher the symbolism and motivation behind interior design as a tool to display wealth, power, and status.

The research methodology uses both; primary and secondary sources to analyse four houses in the pursuit of symbolism that reflects wealth, power, and status.This essay uses a case study approach to explore similarities in design choices within four great houses built and designed during different economic periods. As part of the exploration of the design theory, this essay will be supported by visual aids. The findings show a strong correlation between skilled and intricate design and the display of wealth, power, and status.

Common design archetypes that forgo cultural differences and time periods were also present.  This essay provides insight into the connection between design economics and design psychology and defines archetypes in interior design.
