Amparo Fortuny (she/her)

Artist, filmmaker and producer she has founded the production company The Next Day Films and directed and produced documentaries, videclips, art video and VR.

Her documentary, “Estudiar en Primavera,” has gained international exposure in film festivals and cinematheques, creating notable media impact. Currently, it is distributed by Mubi and Filmin, the leading Video On Demand (VOD) service for independent cinema in Spain. Her latest film, “The Way I Welcome You,” delves into the resonance of memories and places along life’s journey, exploring their interaction with identity and life’s meaning.

At the moment, she combines direction, production and cultural management with academic practice, lecturing filmmaking, storytelling and photography at Glasgow Clyde College.

As part of the GSA showcase, she presents “Nonfiction Ensemble”. This immersive installation features a series of interconnected artworks reimagining the essence of nonfiction narratives. The installation, designed as a diptych, incorporates two synchronised screens merging 360º film with synchronised 2D visuals, all enveloped within an immersive environment using Third Order Ambisonics (TOA).

The Nonfiction Ensemble, with its interwoven narratives and diverse perspectives, invites viewers to engage deeply with the interconnected themes of social inequality, personal identity, historical legacies, environmental concerns, and the emotional journey of grief and healing. In doing so, it encourages a holistic understanding of the intricate threads that bind individual experiences to broader societal and global contexts.

Video testimony of Edu, detained in the Scottish Immigration Removal Centre (Dungavel IRC) and deported.

This video comprises a recording of Edu's computer screen, showcasing his utilisation of Google Maps and its VR tool to reinforce his explanation. The visuals are complemented by multiple reference photos.

The video has a duration of 18 minutes and remains unedited and unaltered.

Methodology: Edu is offered to to share insights into his experiences within Dungavel Detention Centre encompassing its interior and location. To aid in his account, Edu is provided with an assortment of photographs gathered from diverse Immigration Removal Centers (IRCs), Short-Term Holding Facilities (STHFs), and prisons across the globe. Supplementary to these images, Edu is offered access to visuals from the official website of Dungavel Detention Centre. Notably, the origins of the photos remain undisclosed, save for those obtained from Dungavel IRC official website. Edu is also presented with an assortment of options designed to facilitate the compilation of his testimony.

Alternative visual choices and key findings: In lieu of the images offered by the Dungavel IRC official website, the contributor elects to incorporate two photographs obtained from locations within the United States, specifically New Mexico and Texas. These alternate visuals serve to depict the Scottish Detention Centre. Both selected images derive from detention centres managed by GEO Group, the same organisation overseeing the operation of the Scottish detention facility. Remarkably, GEO Group stands as the second largest private prison company in the USA and holds responsibility for various facilities, including Guantanamo detention center.

Video testimony of Edu, detained in the Scottish Immigration Removal Centre (Dungavel IRC) and deported.

This video comprises a recording of Edu’s computer screen, showcasing his utilisation of Google Maps and its VR tool to reinforce his explanation.
